Suzuki GSX-R600 test

The Supersport playground is a tough one to play in so Suzuki has rolled out an all-new GSX-R600 for 2011

Suzuki says it has been completely redesigned and is significantly lighter than its predecessor, delivering more mid-range power.

"The Suzuki GSX-R600 has been developed even further, with Suzuki engineers reducing the weight of individual parts across the whole machine, which has resulted in nine kilograms being shaved off the overall weight of the motorcycle,” says Perry Morison, general manager, motorcycles, Suzuki Australia.

The 2011 GSX-R600 utilises a 599cc, four-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with a revised ignition control and new pistons and camshafts over last year’s model. There has also been a revision to the six-speed transmission with new drive ratios for improved low-to-mid acceleration.

The Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) offers two settings so riders can swap between engine maps to suit rider preference or riding conditions.

There’s a redesigned chassis too, with weight reduction and compactness the aim. A relatively low seat height and a shorter reach to the handlebars due to the 15mm shorter wheelbase has created a seating position that Suzuki claims works well both for track and street riding.

The new frame is made from just five cast sections, and features Showa Big Piston Front forks (BPF) and new radial-mounted, four-piston Brembo monoblock callipers mated to 310mm dual floating discs.

Bodywork is more compact for 2011, with overhang reduced by 90mm and a weight reduction of 35 percent.

As with the GSX-R750 there’s a reshaped fuel tank for the 600, vertically-stacked dual headlights and mirror-mounted turn signals. The 600 also gets a new instrument cluster with analogue tachometer, digital LCD speedometer, LED indicators and a stopwatch/laptimer function.

Price is $18,995 ride-away, with three colour variations – blue/white, black/white and black.
